Cape May has always been where Philadelphia goes for the summer.
In 2026, East Lynne Theater Company begins building a new artistic bridge between the two cities with the launch of its Philadelphia Summer Residency Series — a new chapter in the tale of two historic cities connected by a shared cultural life.
The series begins with Funny Girls, created and performed by Jennifer Childs — Producing Artistic Director of 1812 Productions and one of Philadelphia’s most celebrated comedic voices.
In this fast-paced solo performance, Childs celebrates the revolutionary women who transformed American comedy. With fearless wit and remarkable physical precision, she channels a gallery of legendary performers, bringing to life the comedic styles of icons such as Fanny Brice, Mae West, Phyllis Diller, Joan Rivers, Gilda Radner and others who helped redefine what women could do on stage and screen.
Following the success of last season’s blockbuster cabaret No Regrets: An Evening with Edith Piaf, which first introduced Club Clemans to Cape May audiences, Funny Girls continues that tradition — presented in the theater’s intimate cabaret setting, with musical direction by Owen Robbins.

BIOS
JENNIFER CHILDS is the Co-Founder and Producing Artistic Director of 1812 Productions, Philadelphia's All Comedy Theatre Company. For 1812 she has created over 25 original works of theater including To the Moon, It's My Party: The Women and Comedy Project, The Carols and their annual political humor show, This is the Week That Is. Her solo shows, Why I'm Scared of Dance and I Will Not Go Gently have been performed at Delaware Theatre Company, People's Light, City Theatre Pittsburgh, Theatre B in Fargo ND, the Kohler Arts Center in Wisconsin as well as numerous other venues across the country. She performed at Cape May Stage throughout the 1990s with favorite roles being Laura in The Glass Menagerie, Sylvia in Sylvia and Patsy Cline in Patsy Cline: A Portrait in Song. She is a three-time Barrymore Award winner and the recipient of the Silver Star Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of the Arts.
OWEN ROBBINS (Accompanist) is a Philadelphia musician, musical director, arranger, vocalist and accompanist. For thirteen years, he held the position of Music Director in the Musical Theater Program at the University of the Arts, where he musically directed over 26 shows. He has worked as music director/accompanist on shows with many area theaters, including 1812 Productions, Act II Playhouse, Montgomery Theater, Walnut Street Theater, and the Arden Theatre. One highlight of his career was his collaboration with the late, great Jilline Ringle with her one-woman shows at the Chalfonte Hotel in Cape May. Owen has been accompanist and assistant director for various large choruses, allowing travel to far-flung locales such as Australia, Europe and Oklahoma. In a previous life, he was a musical director for Kings Productions, producing shows for theme parks in the U.S. and Canada. He currently teaches and musically directs at Drexel University and also accompanies the Philly Pops Festival Chorus. He is thrilled to be reuniting with Jen on this trip down memory lane with Funny Girls.
TOM SHOTKIN (Stage Manager) has been stage managing and collaborating with Ms. Childs since 2002! At 1812 Productions, favorites include: She Gets Around, The Play That Goes Wrong, This Is The Week That Is, I Will Not Go Gently, Our Show Of Shows, To The Moon, The Four Of Us, Bat Boy: The Musical. Other recent credits: Two Outta Three, Twelfth Night at People’s Light, Falsettos, POTUS, Assassins at Arden Theatre Company, The Producers, The Play That Goes Wrong at Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, The 39 Steps at Montgomery Theater. Also Hedgerow Theater, Theatre Exile, Arena Stage (DC), Barnstormers Theatre (NH). Tom has also worked for PlayPenn, Hartford Stage Company, Azuka Theatre Collective, and Boarshead Theatre (MI). Tom lives in Ardmore, PA with his favorite person, MB and their monsters Dex & Mabel.
